While sorting half dollars I noticed one with a triangular damage like in the picture but thought it was prob PSD so tossed it in the bin. I would like to read about die cap damage if someone has a link I would appreciate it.

Yes @John1 that's an excellent reference! Thank you. I wasn't able to find a picture of damage like in my picture above but read for a couple of hours on other kinds of damage. I'm going to find that coin and post it maybe as a rugged clip. Thanks again for the link!

But if the devices are flattened like the image, it is not a die cap. If the rims are normal on your coin, then it maybe just a damaged coin that some one cut. Not all die caps look like that.

So just having triangle pieces cut out of a coin, doesn't make it a die cap. They are most often looking like a bottle cap.

@John1 thank you for your interest (the photo above is a picture from a book). As a novice, I ruled out capped die and posted my coin as a possible rugged clip but that was shot down immediately LOL. I wish you would look at it though especially my photo where I laid the damaged coin over a good coin bc the damaged area matched perfectly with what one would see with a clipped planchet. My curiosity though is of the triangular damage opposite the "clipped" area. I saw this picture (above) and wondered if my coin split like this. Someone commented that it looked like a band saw was taken to it, I didn't respond to that bc I know there is no possible way to make that triangle with a band saw w/o leaving an overcut at the top. The damage is perfectly smooth and obviously done with one forceful blow. Also it looks too perfect to be a split, plus there are vertical striations that indicate the triangle was somehow punched out. Doesn't really matter I guess but I would appreciate your opinion of the "clipped" side. And I'm sorry Idk how to send a link to that post!
