Hi all, first real post, thought I would share a snapshot of my collection. I put together a little spreadsheet below, as you see I'm working on a type set (did I miss anything?) and the green squares are blanks that I need to fill in.
I was one of those kids who combed through my change looking for wheats, or 40s nickels or a '64 dime or that kind of thing, grabbed the occasional buffalo or Morgan here or there, and it grew into a nice little collection for very little cost. Forgot all about it for many years, and recently I
inherited the gold coins you see here, plus some "bulk" silver like 200
Morgan dollars :) so it made me remember how much I like these old discs, and now I'm trying to bring the zeros up to at least 1s.
I've been hitting the
ebay auctions over the last couple weeks, filled in lots of gaps, grabbed the occasional big lot that I couldn't resist (thus the 19 capped bust dimes) It is good fun, I always hit the auctions instead of the buy-it-now stuff, better "sport". All my
ebay coins have been exactly as advertised, I was afraid of scams but it seems great so far.
My collection kind of centers around Good/VG/Fine, my interest isn't in the mint or slabbed stuff, I want to grab them and toss them around, and store them in bags.. I call them my "doubloons" :)
Now to fill in those gaps.
The 20 cent piece and liberty
Seated dollar are easy to get, just have to spend the money, looks like maybe 80 bucks for the oddball 20 and $300 for a decent dollar.
Liberty head
Half Cent, and classic large cent, those are plentiful enough but they seem more expensive than their counterparts. For the classics, the
Half Cent was easy to grab cheap, but the large cents are surprisingly big bucks. Vice versa w/ the later liberty head coins, I grabbed a bag of 25 cents for under 10 bucks a pop, while the 1/2c are a lot more. But no shortage, I'll find those soon.
For the two oldest
Half Cents, those are getting expensive and it is just a matter of scanning the auctions, seeing the right thing at the right time and hoping the
ebay piranhas are sleeping.
For the draped bust silver stuff, what a weird world. A
Half Dime is megabucks and I probably won't get one at all. Dimes are way expensive too. Like the smaller the coin the more it costs. I grabbed a 1806 half dollar with 2 scratches but beautiful otherwise for $150, which is about as high as I've gone yet for any coin. The dollar looks like close to $1000, I'll get one of those eventually, a quarter and a dime are doable if I get a lousy one, but the
Half Dime .. What is up with that? Let me guess, they are rare!
The
Gobrecht dollar is an oddball which looks crazy expensive, I'll skip that one for now.
And then we get into the flowing hair silver and those two early 1793 pennies. For the pennies, look at this beast -
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Large-cent...132983764636Wow! you can barely see a thing, and who knows where that will end up $$$-wise. Wreath - same thing. And the earliest silver stuff, those speak for themselves, I'd also start worrying about counterfeits. But any stories of how you grabbed a good deal on this super early stuff I'd like to hear. Anyway there there we are, thank you for listening to me ramble, fun to be back in the game!
