I received this 1901 in today's mail. It is from a dealer from whom I have purchased in the past and have been happy with my purchases. The seller has 100% positive feedback on ebay.

The coin is full red with beautiful cartwheel luster. I've examined the surfaces under my 10x scope. I have been burned by red cents that were artificially colored in the past, so I want to make sure about my purchases. The color and luster look good. There are some faint "fly specks" on the surfaces which leads me to think it has not been cleaned.

The coin has four sharp diamonds. The tops of the headdress feathers are weakly struck, which is a slight concern to me when it comes to an AU coin that may have been recolored. Of course, it could also just be the strike.

The coin also has a small edge mark at 3:00 on the obverse.

I have a fourteen day return privilege. I thought I'd ask CCF members what they think of it.

Your safe , nice original MS-65RD but the rim hit at 3:00 annoys me for some reason . I would try to make it look less conspicuous .

The dark area under STATES in the upper left obverse field looks like it has raised metal and may be corroded all the way down to liberty's eye and the headband. Some die rust-like raised dimples under S in STATES and to left of nose. Some hits to the face of liberty. Reverse is much better. Otherwise looks UNC and red.

Please see my comment in the thread below, as this appears to be a coin from this same seller sold on 3/15.

And although very old, another thread:

This seller also had a secondary account named edelmancheryl which is now NARU.

Expert doctor. I bought several, as they had quite a few rarer varieties that they were unaware of, but of the 4 I risked to send to PCGS, all 4 came back questionable color.

That is the seller from whom I purchased this coin.

I have purchased one other coin from this seller which appears to be very nice, but this one did get me wondering.

The rims are very bright, and normally they are darker on an older coin.

As I said, I've been burned by "altered color" in the past and don't want it to happen again.

Thanks for the "heads up" on this one. I'll see what others say, but I don't want to get stuck with a problem coin.

Actually, I did a little more research, and it appears this seller is the same account, for some reason ebay does not show the old name anymore under User ID history.

Do yourself a favor, and check feedback. Click "feedback as a seller", change items per page to 200, then scroll down on page two. TONS of negatives. Seller must have waited for them to drop off before selling again.

Thanks, indian_horder. You just saved me some money.

This seller does list some coins as dipped and retoned, but not this one.

I will return it and a Wheat cent I also purchased.

"Altered color" is a real pain! I think it's probably best to stick with a TPG coin if you're looking for original full red.

Very tough to tell. Looks fine to me, but I've seen some questionable color coins in slabs that looked good to me, too.

I tend to buy slabbed coins as a rule of thumb. I'd rather have some assurence even at a premium

Interesting discussion. I tend to shy away from full red coins which can prove unstable over time.

The edge usually tells the story on color. This one does look dipped.

This coin, and two others from the same seller, have now been returned for a refund.
