I really like that one, but it's the first time I've seen it. Update: this coin is 99.99 silver and 20,000 mintage. There are a few more details here

What is unique about the 4-dollar "Giants of prehistory" series is this fascinating selective bronze-like finish. Fine ounce specifications: .9999 silver purity 15.87g (1/2 oz) 34.00mm diameter and 2.10 thickness Marc

These look wicked cool! I've always loved dinosaurs..never thought I'd see them on a coin design tho! Now I've got another thing to add to my want list...*sigh*....

A few of my non-collector friends wanted them "for their kids"! Nothing is stuck or printed on these 99.99% pure silver coins - the selective 'aging' finish looks really cool. These are the first 2 coins in a series of 4 "celebrating Western Canada's reputation as a treasure trove of fossil specimens."

I guess all opinions are welcome... I think these are ridiculous. All these coins the mint is coming out with are embarrassing. Coins with fossils, coins with color, coins with jewels, coins commemorating random stuff. Might as well put a bright yellow tennis ball on one commemorating the Queens first tennis game. Please, RCM, make us proud.

Are some of them ugly and irrelevant? Yes I'd agree to that. The ET coin probably falls in that category. 90th anniversary coins also make me scratch my head. Why not wait 10 more years and make it worthwhile? But these NCLT items are nevertheless collected and appreciated by some. And there are coins that are truly stunning work of art. This latest $20 coin for example is absolutely amazing. It is a matter of taste - of course. Marc

Quote: All these coins the mint is coming out with are embarrassing. There have been some bat crazy issues, such as that milk token "coin". Others are more intriguing such as the fossils, but where do you stop? Hopefully before Canada is completely buried in junk coins and collectors are turned off to RCM commems.

That's exactly what is going to happen Kurt. The last coin from the RCM was the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Mint 50 cent piece set. I feel that is a anniversary worthy of celebrating and a design worth spending 40 dollars on.

ok, but with that said, In agreeance (somewhat) with Marc, I have a weak spot for the playing Card money. Simply because of the playing card money started in Quebec in 1685. This seems to be the first playing card money coinage minted to my knowledge. and I hope it is the last. I havnt bought any yet, but I plan on getting the set when I can find the money

Snaz I appreciate your comments and certainly relate to what you are stating. I was very vocal in the early 2000 when it seemed every NCLT release was junk. Massive quantities were minted and unsold inventories dumped to the US for pennies on the dollar. This was 8 years ago. What the RCM has done lately - at least - is that they are creating uniquely crafted collectors items using state of the art technology like PVD. Selective gold plating, color, holograms, plasma, you name it. After all "NCLT" is what it is, no? NCLT does not replace circulating money but is surely A LOT more exciting to look at. Take my word for it, that jack of heart is awesome.... - on a side note I learned that the rectangular milk token actually "circulated" in Canada. Didn't know that. I guess that's why they made it rectangular [correction: triangular] after all... Marc
