Does this look like it could be a faint second D to the northwest and rotated about 15 degrees clockwise?

If you talking about the lower serif issue, Looks like a contact mark. If it were a split serif, it would be enlarge wider, not just have a mark on that area. No spread, no RPM. Here is a RPM-002 that show a unique lower serif that show a spread:
