I am looking for advice on a year 3 shekel that I discovered in a collection my family has. Is this real or a reproduction?

to the community I don't know enough about this type to say either way from a picture. I do know that this is a widely copied type and chances are more that it's one of them rather than genuine. Here are some that are listed as fake: http://www.forumancientcoins.com/fa...um=35&page=1

Lane Eric Please provide measurements (size, weight). A close up of your top pic will help. Again, with this coin the verdict is guilty until proven innocent due to rarity and value.
Update: So far I haven't found a die match at the fake tracking sites. I still don't like how the coin looks. The room is too sharp but the lettering is not. And the edge looks like it was ground to cover the casting seam.
So please post an edge pic too if you can.

and - There are far more reproductions than authentic examples of this coin. Most people do not buy a coin worth upwards of a thousand dollars and then just toss it in with other random coins and put the paperwork in the trash. It is better to assume it is a reproduction, which I am fairly confident it is.

The obverse (chalice) side seems to be a very close match for this example from Wildwinds, which is purporting to be genuine. Which worries me just a little.

I've sent an email to David Hendin the foremost authority on Biblical Coins, hopefully he will reply with the answer.

I heard back from David Hendin. He says that it's a fake. Sorry.

Does this mean the Wildwinds one is fake too? It's the first coin in the list on this page (the one labellled "BMC 12").

I would guess so. David did ask about the weight which we don't have.

The flattening and spread of the lettering on this coin is very much like an example in my collection, which is made from lead. I have similar doubts about the Timeline example, especially when you compare it to the three examples of Hendin 655 or 662 (Year 3) at Wildwinds. Caution here is well advised, and the weight info is all the more important.
