Hello I am searching old bags of coins that were in my moms closet for about 40 years. I came across this 1952-D Lincoln Cent with a large area of surface missing from the bottom of the obverse 6 o'clock to 8 o'clock across the bottom of Lincolns jacket. The coin remains round in this section although the reverse in the corresponding area has significant wear/damage but is it possible this is due to the lack of integrity on the obverse? Not sure if this is a true delamination or PMD? If PMD then the edge and round nature were left surprisingly intact. Thanks for your help.

Looks like a damaged coin to me. It is out of round. It has been flatten somewhere along the life, of the coin.

I agree that it is not perfectly round. It is close but not perfect. I thought this may be due to weakness in that area to to diminished thickness from a lamination When striking any surface on this side?

Not an a peeled Lamination error. It's Post Strike Damage ( PSD).
Errers and Varietys.

I appreciate everyone's help with this one. I was struggling as I would have expected more evidence of being out of round and more disruption to the remaining areas with this much surface being peeled off if mechanically manipulated. However, I wasn't sure. May I ask for my own education, other than being very slightly out of round, what other characteristics do you evaluate to discriminate between delamination and PMD in this case? Thanks

The reverse is telling, which I didn't bother looking at. Duh. The coin is clearly out of round and evidently smashed, my bad. Coop gets it right as always.

It appears in your last photo that the lamination was intact. Did you break that piece off ?

No I didn't. The piece was already missing. The last picture was taken looking into the edge of the section that remained.

I agree with those who call it a damage. Not a mint error.
