Last week I ordered a $1000 bag of halves from my bank. I found absolutely zero silver in it and it made me wonder, is there an advantage to ordering a $500 box over a bag? That seems to be what all of you guys order, and not bags. I did find 5 NIFC halves, but silver is what I'm after.

Yeah, it's a big canvas-ish bag that says Synovus Bank on it. Reminds me of a sack of potatoes or something.

I wouldn't order bags at all. Probably been searched already.

I have done little roll searching but from what I've seen your chances are better just gettint what they ALREADY have on hand.

Just an opinion but I've found a few good coins this way in MUCH smaller batches.

I have too- I had godly luck looking through just 3 or 4 rolls. But this bank doesn't actually have any on hand- including rolls. They can only order these bags. I'm going to go through one more and if it's fruitless, I'll seek halves elsewhere.

Do they have a main branch that's easily accesible? That's where most end up before being sent away.

A main branch... hmm. Not sure. The one I go to is a pretty big branch... I order them from Bank of America. I should ask them about it.

So bags have more likely been searched over already. Has anyone here had any luck finding anything good in a bag of halves?

Find a small local bank. Cripes! Bank of America is huge!

A bank that has 10 or so branches would be a better bet IMHO.

Generally a lot more friendly as well. Buy what they have and then turn in your "residuals" to BOA.

Big banks ain't all that good. Make them work.

Great advice. I'll take all the advice I can get- I'm really new at roll searching and banking to boot.

Should I call up all the local, smaller banks and just see if they have any halves, and scoop them up?

My bank does bags but it is in a different format, they are plastic bags that are sealed and ready to be sent to the main branch. The bank I go to does not order in any coins because of how much is turned into them, I am a little shocked because they do not have a counter and everything has to rolled by hand, but they always have something on hand. I try to get a $50 bag of cents every couple of months but can not afford to move up at this point. I will have to ask and see if they do carry other denominations because I have found some nice things so far and would love to go through nickels and halves from there.

I would think that most bags are filled by counting machines that would reject the silver coins. This would make the bags less successful than than the boxes that often have customer wrapped rolls.

In this situation, I think Fed Boxes or bank wrapped/customer wrapped would be the better way over this "bag".......
I've received a large heavy duty "plastic" bag before (found nuthin')
But never a "gunny sack" looking thing !.......and anyway your "silver finds" from it are probably proof enough right ?...

Yeah, you guys are absolutely right. I didn't think about how those are probably the coins that go through the counting machines.

Going to open up a SunTrust account today, they'll let me order boxes of halves, with rolls in them. Which is what I want.
