Almost everyone suggests buying as high a grade as you can afford. I completely disagree. I feel that the best bargains are at the lower grades. Here is a sample of what I have found for my Buffalo nickel collection after not-very-extensive hunting in $1 boxes this past year:

1913S - Type II (an amazing find for this price)
1914
1914S
1915D
1915S
1917S

The 14S, 15S, and 17S are decent full-date G-4 examples. The others have clear dates under a magnifier. No acid dates, either. Sure I don't have a very nice collection, but I can move on to other series with $400 more in my pocket.

I just wanted to share my good luck with this series and remind all you high rollers that some great bargains do exist if you're willing to look around. You will never find a 1915S this much under-priced in AU-50 or better.

I find that a lot of the "junk bins" can have good finds. My partial IHC collection (1879-1909, date only, no S-mint) came from searching the junk bin. While most are G, some of them are XF+.

A lot of times, these junk bins get filled with excellent condition "common dates" because a dealer bought a complete set just to get the higher-priced key dates...

Of course, sometimes the keys get missed! Great find!

I've snagged many a great coin out of a junk bin, including a clipped planchet, broadstruck 1995 D Kennedy half for .75
