This is not a coin. It has an obverse closely patterned on the Liberty Gold coins, But the denticles don't look right because they are too far from the rim and the rim is too wide (at least as compared to a photograph of the genuine article.)
Heaven knows what the reverse is, but it has never been used on a U.S. coin.
Most importantly, it does not say United States of America and does not say what it is worth.
This is some kind of medal that looks like it was crudely attached to a chain or cord.

Possibly an arcade or expedition token. It's not a coin.

I would assume that it's a made-for-jewellery imitation. THe reverse has a big sun-star, nice and centred, for carefully soldering on a central mount to turn it into a button or cufflink. Given the big grey blob of removed solder in the middle of the reverse, I'd say this did indeed happen to this piece at one stage. Or, you can do what a prevous owner of this peice has done, and just drill your own hole.

It will likely date from after 1876, but probably not too long after - the style of lettering looks late 19th - early 20th century.

@morpa, there have been many tokens and medals made in the last 200 years, 1000s or tens of 1000s, made for many different purposes by many different people, it is unbelievable. There may never have been any documentation of who or what or why. I have seen many strange looking items.

That hole doesn't look drilled to me. It looks more like it was made using some kind of awl as it is ragged. Also, it is in a strange location if you want the head to be in the right place to look like a medallion.

I have seen coins with similar holes made to check if it is the same metal all the way through. I wonder if that is why this was done.
