Recently I pulled this penny book from storage (stored for almost forty years) and I noticed the variety spots were filled with an unstuck planchet and a 1959D. Can someone please tell me about the rarity and value of the planchet (it weighs 3.4g) and also help me determine if the 59D is indeed a variety? Thank you! If anyone wants to see photos of anything in here just let me know. IDK if I will try to finish the book or sell it as is. It is almost complete with exception of eight S dates and of course the main players! And yes I know I'm not allowed to sell on here yet, just putting the word out that everything in my collection will be for sale one day!

I have no idea personally but I would Rembrandt a smiley face etching on one of them and release it into circulation.

Please limit the discussion to one coin if you really want an answer. Too hard to guess about what coin you are talking about.

At 3.4g it's way above tollerence. That is a double error.

I recently got a blank planchet off ebay for about $1... plus shipping of course.

Check out my counterstamped Lincoln Cent collection:

I was offered 3$ at a local coin shop for this one, It's what got me into collecting. It's worth about it's weight in copper seeing how the weight indicates it's pre 1983, 1982 and earlier are around 3.11 and after are around 2.5g

Nice find Coinbert! 3 dollars for your coin is too low. I'd say 5.00 sounds about right.

ccobb's photo of the blank Planchet appears to have a rim. Wouldn't that indicate the planchet has bee struck ?

Pather, it would be a Type 2 Planchet, since it went through the upset milling machine and has the rim formed. http://www.error-ref.com/blank-or-planchet-2/

Commenting on the 3.4 gram planchet or disc. The raised rim or proto rim seems out of character to me. Looks as if something took place to raise it up. Still scratching at this point. Thanks, Doug.

Adding: Being a bit over weight maybe pushed up more?

It is not an unstruck planchet. It was struck. In the second photo from 4 o'clock to 5 o'clock there is something struck onto the disk. It is not Lincoln.

My daughter was the Denver Mint last month, took the tour (for me) and brought me this back. It's a giveaway when you take the tour.

The Duke that's pretty cool. I would think alot of people take those tours, I would if I was closer to a mint. I wonder what else they gift. A mystery bucket full of different errors that everyone grabs one coin out of would be cool. I'd get a plane ticket for that one lol
