In cricket it is normal practice to bounce the ball before it gets to the batsman. Usually the closer to the batsman the better, that way it is harder to hit. Sometimes the ball will travel to the batsman without bouncing and this is called a "full toss" and is usually a batsman's delight. Sometimes the bowler will bowl the ball short deliberately and it will bounce to head height to intimidate the batsman. This is called a "bouncer".
I just Googled "cricket in top hats" and it seems they did play like that in the old days.
