It's rough but definitely brass. I don't know much about the series but all the coins I've seen seem to be made of bronze. Is this coin an outlier or just another common item from that era? Appreciate any comments.

I believe they should be copper, not bronze nor brass.
Did you have it XRF tested.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

DBM, thanks for the info! I've had quite a few of these - mainly rough - in the past and this one came out of a group of maybe 30 coins. I had a collector look through them and he told me I should get this one checked out as it does appear to be brass with its yellowish colour underneath any patina or surface discolouring. I'll have to get it tested for metal content from someone who knows what they're doing. That wouldn't be me.

After working with Chris Faulkner for his token research, and using the XRF in my lab at work - if we learned anything, colour should NOT be used as a criteria for differentiating copper versus bronze versus brass.

SPP, you're right. Colour is deceptive. I'll have to get someone to look at this one. In a group of similar era coins it definitely stands out but that doesn't mean it'll be different.
