I picked this coin up as a regular 1957 as I noticed it was a Type B. When I received it I checked and it is also a doubled die obverse, possible minor DDR. There are only proof doubled die obverses listed for this Quarter. I know the type B reverse is for the reverse but could this possibly prove they retired both the obverse and reverse dies? This quarter is interesting.

Here is the obverse and reverse

Here are the type B die markers.

Here is the obverse doubling. The coin has MD and DDD as well which made this impossible to photograph. L of Liberty shows it well, IGWT has some split serifs I captured.

Obverse and reverse are VLDS. Die crack along bust going to ribbon and die crack down eagles left wing, viewers right wing.

Reverse shows minor doubling in EPU and on lettering but was too minor to capture

Im thinking of submitting this but not sure exactly what all this means. So even though it's a known reverse variety, the only way to prove they sometimes retired both dies is if proof die markers appeared on an obverse die. I'll have to try and match this to a listed DDO and possibly submit it for attribution.

Not a DDR, it is correctly identified as a Type 'B' reverse. (retired proof die)

If I match the DDO to a proof variety, which is probably nearly impossible in this die state, that would mean that this isn't technically a type B reverse but a coin struck from proof dies? I know the 1957 type B reverse is relatively common for a type B, but I haven't seen any verified with a proof obverse die. I will let you guys know if I match it to a DOO and prove this. If not I'll probably submit it to James Wiles for DDO attribution.
