I was thinking about buying this coin from a shop. Its extremely worn. You can only tell that it is a liberty cap. No date visible. Is there a way to extract the date like you can with nickles?

Well its a cool coin to have for 50$ but if I could get the date and some features to come out it would certainly be worth more than 50$ even if only 100 or 75 because it was tamperd with.

My bad I misread the title of your thread. I had half dollars on my mind. As in Capped Bust. Duhhh!

Still I know of no way to bring a date back on copper. Of course if the other details are strong enough someone may be able to identify the year by variety.

Big IF methinks though.

If you could do that with this coin.......then maybe you could "extract" some details as well !!....

Kidding.....
I don't think I'd buy this coin for $50.00......but if you do, post a pic up here and let us see it !

I've bought dateless 1794's before, but only if I am able to attribute them. First thing I would want to know is whether or not it has a lettered edge. If it is a plain edge it is a 95 or a 96. (The only way to separate those is to attribute them by die variety. A lettered edge would be a 93, 94, or 95

Next Look at LIBERTY. If it is down close to Liberty's hair it is a late 94 or a 95. Unfortunately once again you have to attribute to determine which.

If it is well away from the hair then it is a 93 or early 94. Check the size of the letters in LIBERTY. If they are about 2/3rds the size of the letters on the back it's a 93. Also check carefully to see if you can see any beads for the border instead of denticals. If the letters are the same size then it is a 94.

I don't think there's anything you can do to bring up the date because it's copper. The best way to try to find a date on it would be what Condor posted.

Personally, I would save more money and just get one with a date later.
