One of the rare occasions when a clear-date Buffalo makes an appearance here.. but what are those lines that run diagonally through the coin..
like this: //////////
Is this something usual or is it a sign of cleaning?

I am interested to hear an official answer, but I think that it is a sign of cleaning. Its odd though, I have a bunch of Buffs that are streaked the same way, at the same angle even.

I know some Lincolns have this and it is from the planchet being treated wrong and a bad mix of copper. Maybe it is a bad mix of silver?

I can't put my foot on it but, I don't think it is cleaned.
There is the lines, perhaps caused by friction against something else during the period of time.
I don't think it is genuinely cleaned.

TheKid...need better opinions though.

Buffalo Nickels are 75% copper and 25% Nickel. I believe that the lines are from the Cu-Ni not being mixed completely, similar to the streaks discussed in this thread.

It reminds me of the the grain occasionally seen on some of the older wheat cents. I think it looks nice, adds a little character to the coin!

Those lines are called striations, and were caused by improper alloy preparation. The alloy wasn't mixed well or the ingots had ripples in them that didn't iron out well, before the planchet was made.

I agree with hadleydog, improper alloy prep. Too bad it's not the 1916/1916!

Hadleydog, that Two Cent Piece is nice! Are you interested in selling or trading it?

Hi JonS ,You must have 50 quality posts to buy sell or trade on the forum ! it is considered bad manners to ask if a coin is forsale that was offered as an example in answer to a question and not listed or offered forsale .

Please read the forum rules ! Metalman

Improper alloy mix is correct. Hadleydog is confusing two different but distantly related things. Striations and the streaks from improper aloy mix both come from th rolling of the strip, but while the streaks are actually cause by the mixing of the alloy, striations are the lines left on the surface of the metal strip by the rollers and have nothing to do with the alloy.

If you want to learn more about Roller Marks, as diagnosed by Condor101, here's a decent article:

Make sure to look at these links on that page for examples:
