Did someone say an 1860 3CS?

And it looks to have some nice toning on top of being a sleeper. Nice one Prethen!

The key (pardon the pun) is demand. Simple.

The big question is how to determine it.

When new collectors show up here, what are they asking about? Which series?

I'm guessing it's not 3cn's or Barber quarters (sorry).

Kabiye_Lady,

Methinks you speak to soon on this.

Sure when "new" collectors start it is usually the same old. ASEs, Linoln Cents etc. and there's nothing wrong with that.

Of course as the new collectors get more into it they begin to look at other coins as well. Some will start a world collection, others will go type and then there those of us that go for odd denomination.

I've seen an increase in Barber collectors. I'm dabbling with the quarters and have seen marked jumps in a few fairly recently. A good example is the 1909-O.

I have been working on the Twenty Cent "set". The "set" being a whopping 4 coins that I can actually afford.
I need but one - that being the 1875-CC. Gonna tell you prices have skyrocketed on that one.

Two Cent Pieces exploded a few years ago. How many people collect those?

As more people pour into the hobby demand grows for more than just the "usual" list. Takes a bit longer but that's why they're sleepers.

Those that realize this generally do well if they're patient.
I've already seen nice rises in many sleepers I saved over the years. This makes it much easier for me to be patient.

I want to know how long it took for Prethen to get bitten by the 2/3/20 bug!

I'm going to be reshooting that 1860 3CS soon with some better lighting and camera setup. That coin has a lot of flash for a little guy.

Can you tell that I love the series? Oh yeah, that and 3CN. And....20¢. And, of course...2¢. Forget it, just throw the whole 19th century in there!

I didn't really "hit my stride" with 2-3-20 cent coins until about 5-7 years ago, well into my "collecting career".

Here's a pair of CC's that I kinda like...

Nice 1875CCs Prethen!

You know I was starting to like you until you posted those.

Now what can I possibly post to ruin your day?

I agree, but I think 3CN's might have some room to grow since most are pretty cheap compared to other series. Does anybody know of any past series that were considered sleepers and aren't anymore? Maybe we might see some trends...

Amazon...Seated Dollars and $3 gold were cheap-cheap-cheap just a few short years ago compared to where they are now.

Bust Dollars sat dormant for years. Glad I got mine while they were dormant.

My beloved Two Cent Pieces exploded a few years back. May be some room yet but the big explosion has occurred except maybe Small Mottos.

Seems I see high grade type coins are ALWAYS in demand according to Greysheet. Trickle down theory applies.

Some have maxed out (at least for now) while others are lurking.

So what do you think caused the price increases in Seated dollars and $3 gold? I'm guessing more people started to realize how undervalued they were?
