Amazon99,

"So what do you think caused the price increases in Seated dollars and $3 gold? I'm guessing more people started to realize how undervalued they were?"

BINGO!

That's my opinion at least and the reason I started this thread.
It can take time as in years but it does happen.

Prethen's day will come with 3CNs.

Once again, Prethen, great coins! I would really love to see your collection in person sometime!

As far as "sleeper coins", the entire Seated series is still very undervalued in my opinion. The common dates can be picked up for a song. I think this series will start to see some interest in the next 5 years.

The Bust half dollar series is another one. While these coins are generally popular, the prices are still way below what I would expect to pay, though they are slowly rising in value again. The last time the value went up, the market was inundated with them and that drove the price back down.

Barber coinage definitely seems to be on the rise now. For a long time, there seemed to be no real interest in this series, but I'm seeing rising trends in the market in the last 6 months or so.

Common date large cents are another series that doesn't seem to be anywhere near its full potential. This is surprising since there are so many varieties and ways to collect these.

I believe that Lincoln Wheat cents will be on the steady rise now. The change of design in 2009 and the copper content will both play a part in that. Whereas wheats were selling for about 3 cents per coin early last year, the overall price seems to be up to about 5-7 cents per coin overall. Teens and twenties are selling for much, much higher. I just sold 165 1909-1930 lot for $158. These were all average circulated. This is definitely a series to watch.

1927-P Peace dollar
1931-D Mercury (Liberty Head) Dime

Now, those are two sleepers. Check the mintage's on each when compared to the 'Key Dates' of the series'.

Just to provide a little additional information. The 1927-P Peace dollar had a mintage of only 848,000 and can be found in AUish condition for around $50 -$60. A very under valued coin in my opinion.

Now for the big surprise. The 1931-D Dime had a total mintage of 1,260,000. This is 260,000 coins FEWER than the 1926-S and only 30,000 more than the HTF/Expensive 1921-P. The 1931-D Dime can also still be found in the $50 - $60 range in AUish condition and much less for lower grade examples..

Take Care
Ben

Well, no one has addressed it yet but there's an explosion ongoing in scarce Morgan and Peace VAMs. I know these aren't types, they're varieties, but the explosion is there nonetheless.

A treasure-seeker mentality is driving this (yes, I'm a victim). Imagine perusing a dealers case and spotting a coin worth $15,000 with a $40 price tag on it. It has been happening! I started a thread about just such a coin offered on ebay a few months ago. It was only listed for a day before the seller was somehow "informed" and the coin was delisted. There are many more on there right now just waiting to be discovered.

There are a lot of coin collectors with vast holdings and zero knowledge of VAMs. At shows I ask if they know about VAMs. A great number say they don't have time to learn. Fine by me, oh and by the way may I look at that 1878 8TF Morgan in XF there?

I know this is a US forum, but the real sleepers are in foreign coins. Though US coins will be the "king" of collecting for some time, foreign coins are coming. With the rise of some MAJOR world markets, in particular China and India, there will be a rise in disposable income. Just as Americans tend to collect American coins and Canadians collect Canadian coins and Australians tend to collect Australian coins, so too, Chinese will collect Chinese coins and Indians will collect Indian coins. Look to these markets. The coins tend to be dirt cheap compared to equivalent US coins and not because of scarcity or anything, but because of demand. As incomes rise the demand for everything increases, including coins, but current supplies must remain the same so prices will rise. Even if prices are low, if a coin I paid $5 for becomes worth $10, that's still a 100% profit. Though I don't have any scientific data, the rise in prices for foreign material on ebay has been crazy in the last few years. It used to be that coins would sell for 1/3 to 1/2 of catalog, now they go for 150% of catalog or more. Some of this is speculative I'm sure, but there is a truth to it.

Keep one thing in mind...they are only "sleepers" if a greater collector segment cares to pursue them in the future.

10 years ago, I said to a friend that the 1927-S SLQ was a definite sleeper. I have 6 G-F and got them for cents on the dollar years back. Glad I did.

He wasn't kidding about those slq's. I bought mine just as they were on the upward slope for about $7 a pop.

I'll put in my plug for the 1923-29 walkers, which you can find in the junk bins in G-VG, occasionally F, for bullion price. Anything above F is hard to find, and there still could be a bargain or two.

What I think is a sure sleeper still is, the 1880 Shield nickel even though its pricey it should be way more than what pcgs posted it. 1916-d merc is about 400 dollars more but yet the 1880 Shield nickel mint is a mear 16,000 compared to the 264 thousand 1916d mercs

I would like to look into how prices rise, and hopefully see a trend but where would I get this information?

It seems like all you guys are just going on mintage, are there other things to consider? and if there is what else?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Also,what are some long term sleeper coins that might be a good idea to hold onto now, that might be worth something in 40 years?
I'm wondering just in case I lose interest in coin collecting but decide to pick it up again when I'm older.
Sean the key is watch buying trends on some of the bigger online acutions , ebay , Heritage and teletrade , also listen to the walls so to speak there are many folks out here that are close to the market on certian types of coins .
read the periodicals ,coins and coin prices ,coinage including the back issues if you have not read them before ,,watch the prices realised and the number of coins which are on the market for certian years ,mints and series .
