Actually I'm more interested in what I think are die gouges. They are not discussed a lot in this forum, but I am new so I am learning.

If the first image is of a letter on the outer ring, they are not die gouges. They are contact marks on the coin. The devices on the outer ring are incuse. So surface scratches can appear to look like they run behind the devices. But they are on the surface of the coin. The incuse devices are below the contact marks.
