I didn't have an example of the "matron head modified" large cent design (1835-1839). I visited a coin shop in Houston and saw this coin which had pretty nice eye appeal. I'd appreciate your grade estimates and comments. Thank you!

this one is a challenge. the damage around the ear area could be PMD or original to the planchet. since there is no other damage to higher areas like the bun I'm going to assume it probably was original. there is some spotting that could be attributed to a light cleaning without proper wash. the reverse also shows signs of a possible light clean. I don't think either would details the coin. I could go either AU58 or MS63. leaning toward MS

Nice N-6! I'd say MS-63, but possibly details from the damage to the hair. I don't think that's a planchet defect.

Looks to have unc sharpness but it looks unnaturally orange and doesn't appear to have any luster on the surfaces. My guess from these pics is unc detaila cleaned.

Nice looking N-6. Looks to have uncirculated sharpness. In hand is it more brownish in color?

Here are two new photos taken in direct sunlight. The purple tone in these images is closer to the way the coin appears in-hand. The pale area around ONE CENT is less obvious than what the image shows. The coin has smooth fields with some reflectivity and no hairlines. There is no significant cartwheel luster.

I like it and stick with my original assessment. MS63. I think it had a dip at some point in its life but is definitely market acceptable and would not detail. I also still believe the damage in the ear area is original to the planchet or occurred during striking

Thanks for the comments. I think PCGS was a bit harsh with a coin that really does have nice eye appeal. Whatever cleaning this piece might have suffered certainly seems "market acceptable" to me. I'm thinking a crack-out and re-submission might get a better result.

I agree with PCGS. All three sets of photos have different surface colors.
