When I wrote for an explanation and a resolution of the contradictory and incorrect information in the listing (in case it was a real but worn Ellis Island commemorative silver dollar), the seller wrote back, "I don't want to sell it to you." https://www.ebay.com/itm/233189184279Title: 1906~P ~ELLIS ISLAND~ COMMEMORATIVE ~SILVER ONE DOLLAR ~MEDALLION~ COIN ~ Country/Region of Manufacture: China Mint Location: New York Year: 1906 Composition: CLAD Correct me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is that if it's not the real thing, it's an illegal counterfeit, since there's no disclaimer on the coin. The seller's reply didn't inspire confidence, so I reported it to ebay. topic title edited by moderator to follow forum guidelinesEdited by Pauldog 04/18/2019 10:29 pm

Why am I not surprised?
Has anyone else read the Borges story "Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius"? I'm realizing that everything in real life now has a fake version.

If I'm not mistaken, the first thing they teach you in counterfeiting school is to be sure you use the correct date...

The surface texture is way off for a 33 year old coin. I would expect that look of say, a Peace dollar.

"Kinda says where it was made"
But it also says "Mint Location: New York."

These "medallions/tokens" are everywhere. Ridiculous dates, weird denominations, OBVIOUS in description and picture that it is not meant to be a real (and thus counterfeit) coin. WAY different than the pretty real looking China fakes Love the chin on George https://www.ebay.com/itm/GEORGE-WAS...100752.m1982

The important questions are "Are they sold out at the mint?", and "Does it make a great gift?"

It's finally gone. The NY Mint must have recalled it.

I didn't realize that they made U.S. coins in China ! , they are supposed to be made by the U.S. Mint, in the U.S. - Or perhaps this one was made in China. (just kiddin') With a date of 1906, (numismatically) there is no attempt to deceive, except for those who are too lazy to check, or are too gullible, therefore still legal, within ebay rules. Strange looking "O" Probably used an original coin to set up high pressure or centrifugal cast molds. No radial mint luster, and design detail not sharp, despite showing no signs of wear. Check for weight, magnetism, comparative ring pitch against a known genuine example. A problem with ebay:- can't do these checks in hand before submitting a bid, when it comes to numismatic fakes. Helps to explain why so many fakes are attempted to be sold in this way.
