Now and then I find nice coins at local shops, and here's a sixpence I picked up today. I enjoy seeing this much detail on the seal, but there are some mushy details in the portrait. How would you grade this? I was thinking it's a gXF--or perhaps better? Thanks!

Another nice one there Kurt. Think I am going to have to come to the States and do some shopping!
This is a relatively hard coin to find in higher grades. I would give the obverse a gEf and perhaps aUnc for the reverse. It may grade higher in the hand as these pictures are very large and very clear, which shows up every little detail and imperfection. It is hard to say whether it is wear or rubbing on the Kings portrait, and the weakness of the strike doesn't help. But overall, a very nice coin.
I should add that I have seen this year in not as good condition being sold as uncirculated.

Sean, Thanks and your grade sounds right to me. The obverse luster is more dramatic in hand, and no flattening from wear, but there are a several small marks on the cheekbone, jaw and hair. One reason I posted this pic is to mention the shop has more 1940 3d 6d in a similar grade, which I'll gladly pick up for anyone here-- around $1.50.

3d or 6d? At that price, I will take as many as you can get. Let me know how much and how to pay you Kurt. Cheers.

I'll see what I can find for everyone next week. Basically, most of the 3d-6d I saw are better grades and from the 40-50s, and $1-2. Sadly, no 1914-16 coins for that price, lol. There was also a 1943(m) Shilling around XF for $10, if that interests anyone. Thanks to Sean, I have one already

Update: I've been a little burned-out this week with a cold, so I haven't visited that dealer for those who expressed interest in predecimal 3d and 6d. It looks like next week.
