Looks like a small die crack. What is the difference between a small or large die crack? Usually the length will determine if it is small or large. Length can happen if the crack is a larger crack on the die.

Note the split running down the die? The longer the die crack on the die spreads, the more the die will flex during the strike making the coid wider and showing larger on the coins struck with this die.

A die chip is when part/part of the die has broken away off the die. The coin on the die will leave a raised area on the coins struck with it. die chips can happen on die cracks or just on a device near the field area.

But what could create a crack and a chip? These occur when the die has cracked, and then a flake of the metal from the die has broken away.

Die breaks
The first one is called a pre-die break:

When the die has a lot of metal breaking off a die, a die can progress from having a crack, chips and then be called a die break.

Retained interior break

This die split has developed from a die crack, then die chip happening on the crack, then into a die break as the metal is starting to fall away from the die turning into a retained die cud.

Note the location of the outside of the die on this Retained Cud?

On the new coins a retained obverse Cud can happen.

Die splits
This die actually split in two near the center. Just placed together for the image.

The splits can look pretty interesting at times.
