Vermontensium-
I looked at your PCGS-graded EF40, and I see what you mean. The obverse on this coin has significantly more detail--the eagle is definitely AU detail. Perhaps the reverse on this one is more strike than actual wear? Overall, there are a few more hits than your coin, but if you think PCGS would grade it as AU50, I'll go with that.

It's a nice coin. Looks to be original uncleaned as well. I have seen similar "streaks" in the metal composition of these 57 and 58 FE cents. This is normal for those years. I believe they were experimenting with alloys.

Yep--I have a nice 1857 "obverse of 1856" variety with similar planchet streaking.

After looking at my FE, I'll regrade to EF45. It seems to have a tad more detail on the breast feathers and tail.
Mine is graded by ANACS as EF40.

Since I bought this coin I have started looking on ebay for varieties of FE cents. I have found what COULD be another Snow-16. Because it's in the UK & shipping is $12 I'm not interested myself. I don't know how to post a link, but it's auction #260277606416 & ends in about 15 hours.

If you have any interest in this coin please verify the attribution for yourself; I can see what appears to be the die chip, but can't see any of the other markers in the picture provided by the seller. Also, please note the seller has recently had some negative feedback.

I think you're right! That chip is a very distinct marker.
