just curious if this is an error and if it is what is it called. I'm not sure if the weird edge is visible enough in the photo, but it isn't flat at all, it is more of a swoop whereas the reverse side is just a flat edge that is also weird. Wish I had a better way to describe it.

It's not an error. It's an encased, or "lucky token" cent. It used to be inserted in an aluminum or tin ring with an advertising slogan or other message on it.

well, that's interesting. Thanks very much. I'm going to keep it just because it's the only one from that year that I have.

Hi

I read the reply and was wondering how one came to that conclusion
about the coin being an Encased Coin ?
I have had many of these coins encased in aluminum rings since I was a kid.
Both wheats and IHC's. I used to even take them out of the casing and they were perfectly normal coins in all aspects.
Just curious ?

I knew a guy that before he passed away many years ago, didn't know that Encased Cents were collectible. He popped about 50 cents out of their encasements. Most looked like the one above. I still have a few of them around here someplace.

Since some of the cents, (one or two out of the 50 ) didn't look distorted too much, I would have to guess that it depends on the way the coin and the encasement were joined. In any case having seen those cents immediately after they were removed from encasements, I know that I can personally account for the way the coin looks.

It may also have to do with the degree of wear as some people did use to carry Encased Cents around as "lucky pieces" . That's just a guess as I didn't connect wear to the condition of the coins that I saw as I didn't see which coins came out of which encasements.

The coin shown above to a high degree of certainty did spend some time as an Encased Cent.

Thanks,
Bill
