ikimusic New Member Canada 13 Posts	Posted 08/22/2008 7:30 pm Im just wondering, is grading for new coins the same as grading older coins?. Like for example a clean looking 1965 coin is graded VF+ and a "dirtier" looking 1886 coin is graded VF+, visually they look different, the 1965 coin is much "cleaner" than the older coin.. obviously because of the age. So does the older coin have a different level of grading it? That is what I'm confused about. Report this Post to the Staff

vermontensium Moderator United States 16677 Posts	Posted 08/22/2008 8:09 pm The Sheldon scale for grading coins begins at Poor-1 and goes to Mint State 70. It is a 70 point system for grading coins. Just because the 1965 looks as you stated, "cleaner" than the 1886, probably but not necessarily means it has a higher grade. The coin could have been dipped or cleaned to give it that "non-dirty" look. All U.S. issue coins have different elements of how you grade them, but, grades would remain consistent based on the Sheldon scale. A coins "level of preservation" would depend on how long that coin circulated in the circle of general commerce. Bilbo Pillar of the Community United States 812 Posts	Posted 08/23/2008 01:49 am Several issues here. 1-The grade of a circulated coin is how much wear the coin has, so the dirt/toning/whatever should not be a factor. Those things do affect "eye appeal," but not grade. 2-The Sheldon scale was designed to be a grading scale and a pricing guide. As a pricing guide it was an utter failure and has long been abandoned for that purpose. As a grading scale, it is now the standard. 3-Welcome to the forum! Report this Post to the Staff
