Just wondering, what's the best/favorite coin you all have found in circulation: roll searching, coinstar, common change... I guess the best I've found roll searching was a 1936 Buffalo nickel. I also found a 1923 Buffalo in my cash register at work. I'm still new at this, though, so I'm wondering what the rest of you have found.

I guess when most people see a really worn out coin, they figure it can't be worth anything. That's fine with me. I used to find wheat pennies and foreign coins in the Coinstar machine as a kid; haven't done that in a long time.

My favorite coin pulled out of circulation is a 2001 S Kennedy half dollar. It is blackened and warped from heat damage, has cut marks on both sides, and has circulation wear. When I showed it to my wife, she scrubbed it up with silver polish, further adding to its charm. Even after all that abuse, it is still clearly a proof coin, with hints of a mirror surface in its ruined fields. Its both repulsive and fascinating.

There have been many but I guess my 1909S VDB Cent was about the most valuable. Used to pull many, many greats coins out of change but that was way, way back when no one thought anything of Silver coins or Silver Dollars. When I was a kid there was not even such a thing as a Roosevelt dime yet.

The sentimental favourite is the 1964 Dime that is still in my Dansco. I got it in 1980 from lunch change when I was in Grade 6. It was the first silver coin I acquired from circulation. Honourable mention goes to the 1911 Barber dime I found while roll-searching in 1993. It can still be found living in my 7070.

Update: My new favorite coin has just been found. I got two rolls of half dollars today, checked them for silver, none, them checked them 30 min. ago and found a 1974D Double-Die Obv. I know it's not worth much, but being the first error coin I've ever found, it's my new favorite!

I think technically this would be from circulation since I obtained it accidentally with the intention of spending it. I was at my bank one time getting some small dollars. I purchased $15 from the tellers scratch tray and they were a mixture of Pres, Sacky, and SBA. One of the SBAs happened to be a proof 1979-S T2 It is the one and only proof I have ever found loose but what a proof to find.

Well....I have a couple answers to this one. When I lived in Fresno, CA I got a 1921 Peace dollar in my cash register at work, I of course still have the coin. That would probably be my most valuable find. My favorite finds though would have to be the various NIFC Kennedys that my girlfriend and I have found roll searching. These include a 1970-D, a 2004-P a 2005-P Satin. The reasons these are my favorites are that these were the coins that turned her into a collector, and they also revitalized my numismatic spirit as well. We're now turning these finds into a full Kennedy set, and I gotta say, it's been the most fun I've ever had with coins since I fist began collecting 9 years ago.
