I have a straightforward question.

I am trying to determine if a coin that I own is worth anything. I am told that one of the things to look for is whether there is a mint mark. I am also told that for the particular coin I have, the mint mark is a letter of the alphabet found on the heads side of the coin.

I examined my coin to where the mint mark is supposed to be. When I look there, I don't see a distinct letter, like a P art a D or any other alphabet letters.

Instead, I see a small little roundish blob - like you would see if a very tiny piece of solder fell on something and solidified into a tiny roundish shape.

Is this a common thing, and is it an indication that there is no mint mark on this particular coin, or could it be there there was a letter of the alphabet that is a mint mark, but somehow got obscured to look like a roundish shape?

Thank-you

Mary

It would help if you gave the year and denomination.
Also pictures of both sides are usually required.
From what it sounds like, it could be a smashed MM
or possibly a broken post, but will need pictures to confirm.

For a straightforward answer, we need pictures of the coin or at the very least to know what it is (country, denomination, year, mint, ..)

to CCF. Too many things can happen to a coin, some are collectible and most are not. We will need to see photos.

Thank-you. I will see what I can do. It's not entirely my coin and I am told that it may be rare. Just was interested is some general possibilities. Thank-you for the warm welcome.
