There is probably sentimental value, they could have been passed down through family etc. I know if I were in the same position I would want to recover what I could. If they were the coins my father or grandfather gave me I would take them and retain them even if they were a molten blob. Otherwise I would sell the remains for what I could. As for the woman talking, she appears to be the voice of reason. My wife does the same thing and, while I might not appreciate it immediately I realize she is right 99% of the time and I do what I am told 100% of the time. Gotta play the odds.
