I just picked this up today. I am new to collecting Shield nickels and was wondering what this would grade. Thanks.

How can you tell that they are cleaned? From the collection of dirt in the ribs of the shield and around the stars on the reverse?

I am guessing that they are saying cleaned by the dark rings around the details on the coin.

Thanks for the input on the grade.
Do dark rings around the details always indicate a coin has been cleaned?

In general this is true. It depends. Now I have it both ways.
I think you have to look for evenness though the coin. I feel most coins of this age have been cleaned at one time or another. I am not the purist. I don't care much about if a coin has been cleaned. As long as it looks good I'm okay with it.
So congrat on the acquisition.
XF45 to me.

XF45, maybe AU50

During the shield series run, a lot Shield nickels were redeemed by the government and cleaned(by dipping them in an acid) and then reissued. This is why a lot of Shield nickels have a muted, luster free look on them. Personally, I think it was cleaned. Still, it's a nice coin and you wouldn't have a problem finding interested buyers for it if you sold it.

I also see something funky going on with the date. Can't tell if it's a RPD or just Machine Doubling. Can you get a close up of it?

Amazon - Thanks for the info on the Shield nickels do you know why the government decided to clean them? I noticed the date too. I posted some pictures of the date in the error forum and the consensus was it was Machine Doubling. Good catch thou.
