Counterstamped Combo: 1870 Shield Nickel & 1871 Indian Head Cent Same Stamp

paralyse Bedrock of the Community United States 12057 Posts	Posted 05/02/2019 9:59 pm I happened upon these two counterstamped coins, both with what seems to be the same counterstamp -- listed by different sellers, and I was able to bid on both. Kind of neat since all my other counterstamped coins are "solo" and don't have others with the same stamp. Both coins were actually bent by the force used to stamp them, causing damage to the reverse. In addition, the 1871 has pitting, and appears to have been lacquered or shellacked at some point. Since there are at least two of these mavericks, they perhaps shared some commercial or merchant use. While counterstamped initials are rarely attributed, it does happen; this, typically when another host coin bearing identical initials AND an otherwise attributed counterstamp. These are two, better dates that could be the nucleus of counterstamped cent and nickel year sets, eh what? Report this Post to the Staff
