Im too much of a rookie, I think I have the final answer right, crossing my fingers.

i know it could be a vise job, or another coin pressed against it. but I really think it is a form of strike error. (i have 2 guesses, if it is)

Thank you ... really trying to learn , the abrasions made it tough, but really trying to learn to differentiate. And direction on What could cause that type of damage since both sides of the coin aren't the same, and the reeding is normal and none is the normal smooshing ?

It appears to be a "garage job." It was smashed between two other quarters, either by a vise or heavy hammer blow. It's just damaged.

Thank you for the answer it helps visualize and learn. Found an almost identical coin on error ref after your lead. Now it clicks in my head.
