1881-S VAM Determination Difficulty

desertgem Pillar of the Community United States 860 Posts	Posted 08/26/2008 12:43 am This VAM variety of an 1881-S is not apparent to me using both the Vamworld site and my Van Allen and Mallis book. The apparent die chips on both sides of th middle of the first 8 are easily seen. Both ones have a doubled crossbar at the top.The arrow is pointing a raised ridge of metal, and not just the different in luster/toning The second "1" double is less raised than the first one. I can't seem to find a combination with the die chips and the doubling. The "s" mintmark appears normal. Appreciate any insight. Jim Report this Post to the Staff

jeffreyice1 Valued Member United States 381 Posts	Posted 08/26/2008 12:54 am I'm no expert on this yet, but it looks to me like the whole date is shifted to the north (Could be lighting). What your seeing is the remnants of the lower 8. you can also see clearly the bottom of 1881 below all digits (If not lighting). I don't know what term to call it. I don't think its a RPD but could be. Edit: Went back and looked at my two 1881 S's. One shows similarities to yours. See Picture below. Never use die chips between loops of 8s when trying to VAM your coin. This is very common on Morgans and are not used to determine a VAM. They are used as die markers on some coins. MorgansRmine Pillar of the Community United States 1219 Posts	Posted 08/26/2008 7:57 pm desertgem, I believe what your seeing as doubling under 1s is just die push on the coins surface. Also visible under the 2nd 8. Using the large picture it appears to have a die chip in upper loop of 1st 8. S mintmark is centered and tilted slighty left. Unless you can find doubling or die chips somewhere else on the coin, I would go with Vam42. Report this Post to the Staff
