What are you seeing that causes you to believe this might be an error?

This I think should probably not be in the modern forum and in the classic forum instead.

Depends on who defines it but I'd consider 1965 and newer as modern.... but I also feel that Lincoln Cent series would be the start of modern, so 1909... but maybe 1959 and the memorial reverse.. but there were still Franklin half's at that time... probably 1965 would be the modern coin era when silver was removed and all coins had been changed.
Some might even say 1999 when they started changing quarter reverses... anywho..

Is there a clearly defined definition of what are modern coins and what aren't? I'm not sure about that, but I feel like an 1858 FE cent would be classic.

Looks to me like an 1858 large letters variety, but I'm no expert on those coins. I don't think it's the 1858/7 over date because I don't see the die markers for it in the picture. Again I'm no expert, and I don't collect FE cents to know all that is out there for varieties.

The date looks perfectly normal, to me. This is what to

look for w/the overdate.

1858 Small Letters with Low Leaves reverse. I believe the OP is asking about the "doubling" of the date which as mentioned above is Strike Doubling and carries no additional premium. Looks like a nice VF coin.

I do see rim crumbling and Cuds on the reverse other than that nothing that strikes me as an error or variety.
