Recently we got my mom's coin collection back. Most of the coins were from a friend and one of them appears to be a Japanese token or coin of some sort.

Can anyone identify this?

I look forward to seeing what you have.

Ok thanks for adding the pic. Showing the other side would be helpful, but I'm pretty sure that you have a 1 Sen struck during WWII. Here is a link to the numista page to help you confirm.

I am not an expert on Japanese coinage, but I can read Japanese.
Edit: Initially, I thought that this might be a 10 sen coin, but the attribution of a 1 sen coin above by Spence looks like a better fit to me.

The key difference between 10 and 1 is that the character for 10 is a cross, whereas the character for 1 is a straight line.
(It's like roman numerals turned on their side.)

Glad to help! It is a nice coin @j1d, but I'm concerned about the degradation of the zinc. Especially if you live in an area that gets humid in the summer, I'd strongly recommend against keeping it loose like it is now. The coin isn't worth a ton, but zinc rot will only further degrade the value.
