Another counter strike, this time NJ. This one needs a good acetone soak to remove the crud on it.

Interesting counter stamp because although the letters NJ appear to be correct the outline of the state is actually backwards. Are they separately struck?

Counter strikes or counter stamps are put onto coins by individuals to mark them for some reason or another. There are tons of various examples out there and some people collect them.

Masonic symbols are a common example, as are images of JFK and other famous individuals.

Google search images of "Counter stamped penny" and you'll see a good variety of examples.
