I saw this AU-55 1902 Barber quarter in a PCGS holder. It has quite a large scratch (at least in my opinion) on the cap. I would have thought a scratch that size would have merited a "Details - Scratch" grade.

How much larger would the scratch have to be to not receive a straight grade?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this.

It's very close, I agree, and this coin will no doubt sell at a discount as it changes hands.

I think this is in that gray zone where it is judgement call, but I have seen these in details scratched holders for less prominent scratches. imho it should be in a details holder. there is a scratch by the fold of the cap and another through the laurel wreath, the ear and the cheek.

It must have graded on a monday.
On friday it would have been details.
Rest in Peace

I'm thinking the scratch would have to be a lot more to receive a details grade . I agree with PCGS on the straight grade .

I agree with T-Bop. it is not in a high visual impairment area so it affects it a little less and it is not overly deep. could have went either way but I agree with the straight grade also

It should not have straight-graded. Other more-common issued would have been "detailed." Consistent, universal standards are nothing but a mythical pipe dream.

I'm pretty sure I know who the dealer is -- and I should note that I respect him quite a bit and have bought several very lovely coins from him -- but I suspect that's probably why it's in a straight-grade holder, given the volume of coins he submits to PCGS.

Remember the OP's photos are quite enlarged - in hand, I think this scratch would be a minor distraction.

PCGS "no grade" standards for scratches are a bit loose. The key sentence is:
PCGS will not grade a coin which displays a visible scratch that we deem would make the coin unacceptable to most collectors.

IMHO, the same scratch on an UNC coin could make PCGS detail it, but PCGS deems it more acceptable on a circulated coin.
