I'm a little confused why this coin seems to be so valuable. I've found a few of them now, and they seem to go for $10+ a piece on ebay, despite the fact that the explanations I've seen are either that they were Struck Through Grease or the result of over-polishing. Since these types of errors don't usually carry much of a premium, is the value just that people like the "coolness" factor of what the altered coin reads? Or am I just mistaken about what causes it in the first place?

It's usually caused by a slight Grease Fill Die isdue, where one cavity gets filled with grease. There's no extra value for that error, since it's very common and just has too much hype going on.

Someone gave it a name and the market was hot for it years ago. Now it is just a filled die with grease as the cause. When the States quarters were the rage, stuff was given a name and it was hot. Until the bottom fell out of the interest of the states quarters. Now they are just another coin. (in my book that is)

Thanks, that is what I figured. I'm going to try to sell the ones I find, since they seem to still carry a bit of a premium that I expect will only decrease as time goes on.

If you do,please list them for what they really are and don't take advantage of the newbies in the hobby.

Will do, just going to say "'In God We Rust' Grease Filled Die error" if I do. I'll probably end up being too lazy though, if I'm being honest :P

Simple answer, Hype (especially on youtube).

Once the hype eventually dies they are 25 cent items. 1989 and 2000 NH no mintmark quarters were caused by the same thing, They used to be $100+, today most people don't even know or care that they existed and they bring very little.
