My first thought is that it was a hit. Now I'm not so sure. A hit that strong, you would think would cause damage on the rev... which I don't really see. But I'm not an expert either.

Definitely not Post Strike Damage. That's a genuine mint error. It was probably Struck Through a Shaved Off Rim Burr. Awesome find John1!

If you look closely at the indent on the coin, you do not see and raised area around the indent. My guess definitely Struck through.
Great example, I'd keep that in a 2X.

I agree. If the coin took a hit that strong, the reverse would show a pushed out area. That is not visible. So it is a struck through a rim bur. (a large one) Thanks for posting these images John. This is a great addition for my educational files.

No problem John1.

Here's a link to one of my older threads from last year. It was Struck Through a Shaved Off Rim Burr. It's huge and is almost the same size as yours. http://goccf.com/t/327831

I am not 100% sure it is a rim burr. The rim burrs that I have seen look like the edge of a flying saucer,(for a lack of a better description) while mine has the shape of a spokeshave

On way to check it to carefully place another coin on that area to see if it is a match. (I'm sure it will match)

I think what this looks like, to me, is a disc clip or rim clip fragment strike through.
