Very common on cents of 1955-1958. Collectors of these will find subtle varieties that are beyond me. Anyone who wants a clear BIE from the 1955-1958 era in red AU, just PM me and send a stamp.

Thanks for the info, levelsofmadnes! The chip is a perfect match to ...026 4FL+, but the marker is a filled in MM, which mine does not have Coinfrog- I'll take that under advisement.

Not a spender as there is a small premium for the Wheat cent. Clearly there are some die chip enthusiasts, but I'm not sure how big the market for these actually is.

That's the impression I get about these, Spence, and thanks for commenting on my post. I'm not sure that they qualify as an error or variety in the minds of serious collectors because they are common. For me, it's just fun to find something remotely interesting and save it from circulation. A conversation piece with a modest premium is good enough for me.

I agree with everything you said except for your use of the word "serious". To be sure, there are some folks who are very serious about this area of collecting. Several of them hang out on this website. Rather, I would argue that there just aren't as many of them compared with some other areas of numismatics and that makes the market for things like BIEs somewhat thin.

BIEs are for sure still of interest to a small group of collectors. Many BIEs do command a premium, though generally not so much in circulated grades.

"Anyone who wants a clear BIE from the 1955-1958 era in red AU, just PM me and send a stamp." Coinfrog, a generous gift to a new collector. Back in the early sixties when coin collecting had a rush of enthusiasm my father would give a 1909 Lincoln Cent to the new collector. You remind me of him.
