Is there a community or something that collects these? 15 grains sold for 5 bucks and there is only about 40 cents of silver in the whole lot.

Generally the problem is that the average person doesn't know weight units.
The listing says "grains" and people think "grams".
They think they're getting a bargain.
One Grain of weight is equal to 0.065 Gram.
Don't sneeze or it's gone.

The manufacturing and packaging cost per unit would certainly increase the cost of these tiny items, and if you add the ebay listing and paypal fees, it kind of gives a minimum sell price.

That being said, @kanga is right, and I think that they are preying on the ignorant. That is probably the biggest factor in the high price.

My LCS once had a bunch of 1 gram ingots they sold for $1 Canadian each. At the time they probably had 70 cents worth of silver in them. The 30 cent premium was probably a fair markup and represented a novelty value, so I got a few.

However, it is obviously a rather poor investment, and the seller is banking on the buyers making an impulse decision.

I think Silver Is a odd metal to collect you pay 80 bucks for a coin that is worth 26 bucks The coin dealer's are getting rich but your NOT >>> YOU LOSE. The price of silver will never be high enough to get your money back. heck they just opened up TWO BIG Silver Ore mines. Get in to Gold and Gems. Yes collect the silver coins that have value, But silver as an Investment NAH...

I have never heard of a 'grain bar' for money, but
the Chinese used tea bricks for money.
(Just a play on words.)

Generally with supply and demand: the supplier is willing to let more of the product go if the price is high in order to maximize profits. So a tiny amount to "chop off" has to be worth a supplier's time and material. You see that with "stackers" who hoard and wait for their comfort price.

Ounces are the common man's unit. Kilos are where you save on cost, but the problem is finding an end-buyer who wants a kilo.

Anyways, grains are a rip-off. Sometimes even a person's handwriting can confuse grains with grams.
