Good evening,
I have another coin, a 1964 SMS JFK Half Dollar sealed in set, with No Accented Hair, and a serif on the I, however, the rays with the stars on the reverse are broken, just like in a Accented hair variety. And, the G in the FG initials seems to have horizontal serif on the end of the G just like on the non accented hair coin, but I may just not be able to see this serif. I have looked all over, even the books and I must be missing something, this coin is in a sealed 1964 SMS set. Please forgive me if I am just losing my mind and this is normal. Also, sorry for the photos, it is close as I can get.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Hi,
I was just reading your post and it helped a lot. Mine is in an SMS set are any of yours? I know the SMS set was minted in Philadelphia so maybe they used the same die in some of the SMS sets as well. It was just weird, I had 2 sets in the same mailing box from the mint, sealed, and one had these markings and the other was the normal non accented hair coin. Oh well, one of these days I am going to find something. Thanks again for your help, I really appreciate it.

Mine were not in mint sets, they were purchased years ago as a bulk silver investment.

Something I found as a marker for this die is on the '4' of the date:

Isn't the OP's coin a proof coin, not SMS?

The finish looks proof as well as it is in the mint sealed wrapper with the heat sealed border from proof sets.

Hi,
Thanks to everyone for your help. I messed up and purchased this from a dealer on his word it was an SMS set, I guess now it is a proof set. He told me that there were no proof sets in 1964 and since this set did not have the red or blue stripe on it that it was an SMS. I guess sometimes you just cannot trust even a dealer and I really need to do a lot more reading before I purchase anything more. Anyone know what the SMS set look like, what kind of packaging it came in?

Thanks again everyone.

Hope you didn't pay what a real SMS would cost!
There only about 20-50 sets produced according to PCGS.
Here's a https://www.PCGS.com/news/1964-spec...nt-set-coins to the info.
