I searched through my junk 1964 Kennedy half dollars to look for die errors. The top image is typical of what I see for the mint mark. Is the bottom image a D/D variety?

If you compare your two images you will see that the overall size of the mintmark is the same on both coins. There was lateral movement of the die or the coin as the strike of the die was being completed that caused this. Machine Doubling is what it is called and it carries no interest for collecting as it is a common occurrence.

OK, thanks.

To me, it looked like the bottom of the D is much thicker and there is a rotation of about 10 degrees or so.

It's the only one I found in about 300 1964D, so I'll keep it separated from the rest of the herd, regardless.

Thanks again.
