I dont know much about coin errors, but today I found a 2001 Vermont State Quarter with a rim error. Can anyone tell me what these types of errors are called and if it's rare?

to CCF. Looks like a Dryer Coin or the start of a spooned coin. Try using the search box, upper left of page for more info.

@vn, first welcome to CCF. Second, I agree with @john1 that this coin has been altered after it left the mint. If the edge looks mostly smooth then it is most likely a drier coin. If it is more textured--"pebbly"--then it is more likely spooned. Either way it is only worth face value.

Definitely Post Strike Damage ( PSD), not an error coin. Worth 25 cents.

Looks like someone spooned the edges of the coin. One would do this to make the rim wider in preparation for drilling out the middle and turning the coin into a ring.
