To CCF! Probably damage most likely from PSD.
Errers and Varietys.

Welcome and I would agree that it most likely is a die chip, where a piece of the die, at a vulnerable part, near the date, breaks away. The striking of the planchet allows metal to flow into the broken area creating a blob appearence.

To me it looks like die scratches on that area. Note how they tail out from the device and fade into the fields. Die scratches remain stronger next to a device. That is what I see is going on with this coin. No premium, just a die event.

I was first thinking...staining,,after looking at reverse..I changed my mind and it is/was caused by the beginning of zinc rot... to CCF..keep hunting..good luck

It is hard to have zinc rot on a copper coin. LOL

@ Coop..that is true , but this is a zinc cent. Take a look at the reverse and the center of the "vases" on both sides of the staircase...see the black spots, that's where the copper has worn off and is exposing the zinc..

I see the area your taking about, but can see if they were gray or not. Weight would be a sure sign, but it looks like a copper coin from the date images.
