So I know from previous posts that there's a lot of MD on Reverse of the State Quarter, especially the newer ones. But the Reverse on this 2018 Cumberland appears to have serifs or notches too me or doubled the areas. Than the Reverse of 2006 Colorado the 8 in the date has area around it, I've seen on other DDR dates. So question is are these still considered MDs or is there Doubling ? Sry I didn't want to do two separate topics.

Ok well I was curious because I've never seen separations like that before on the 2018.

The devices on the area inside of the ring are all incuse. That means they are raised on the die. So any movement during the strike before or after, causes the devices to look like doubled dies. But are Machine Doubling. So much so, that as high as 70% of the coins can have mild or major doubling, caused by the machines. The area for the States and ATB Quarters to look for doubled dies in not on the outside devices, but in the central areas for doubled dies. These are the single squeeze dies. The doubling is in the centers of the devices 98% of the time. Look at Wexler's listings and you will see that is the case. So on the obverse look at the earlobes. Reverses look for the central areas for DDRs. The previous doubled dies were hubbed differently. Now with the single squeeze dies, most of the time, the doubling is found in a different area more towards the centers. (class 9 doubled dies) so coin post 1996, the doubling is in a different location than the Class 1-8 doubled dies. Sometimes the single squeeze dies are started to be hubbed, then the worker notices that it was not starting correctly. So he backs off and restarts the process. So they are making a die that was hubbed twice. (So they are then the Class1-8 doubled dies.) but that is not supposed to happen. On the Class 9 doubled dies, it is a one step hubbing process, that started wrong, but snaps in to the correct position. The out of alignment kiss is altered when it snapped into place, but the center part still shows a doubled die. On the quarters there are so far only two dies (one from each series) that is not class 9 doubled dies. So that is why I mentioned 98% of the time earlier. (I'll add images tomorrow, I'm using my tablet now and it is harder to post images from it.)

Novicecoins,
WADR, you should practise your coin pic taking a bit. Most pics are out of focus and there is a lighting issue as well.Maybe some members with photo skills can give you some tips and tricks...just sayin'

On the single squeeze coins, the incuse devices that are near the central area, when a doubled die happens on them, they devices don't get larger, they get smaller:

But the devices on the outside edge devices are not affected. (well not that I've seen so far, but who knows) But all the examples like yours occurs on a large percentage of the coins. (70% mild or strong) So they are not a doubled die. Why? Because the doubling is created by the machine. On a doubled die, the doubling is on the die, thus the term doubled die.

Thanks Coop. Lordy there's so much info on knowing some of these different kind of dyes. . I thought a majority of the DD makes the letters and such bigger, not smaller. I've been trying to compare photos from V.Vista to help me. But still manage to get it wrong 99% of time. I try and go through the topics and look as to what others are seeing and if they are doubled, figure out if I can make them out or not. All info and feedback is much appreciated !!
