Hi everyone, I'm trying to confirm if this Barber dime is a repunched date, variety FS-301. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The "9" is the focus of attention.
It does look as if it were re-punched, although the reason for doing this is not known by me.
After looking at your enlargements I returned to your first photo and the "9"
was clearly visible as being "odd."
Lets see what others say...
(BTW, what does FS-301 mean?)

Thank you for the input, Matthew. The FS-301 reference is from the Cherrypicker's Guide, fourth edition volume II. On page 49 there is a photo showing an RPD similar to the one I posted. The actual reference is FS-10-1908-301. The guide also references the RPD as Lawrence 101.

I take it that that is David Laurence - quite the expert on Barber coins.
Bless the collectors who sacrifice their eyesight in search of these varieties!
The Complete Guide to Barber dimes (Laurence) says:
[ 1908 ] "Many re-punched date varieties."
A common date with an uncommon opportunity to discover unusual things.
#101 - a 909/909 - "Obvious re-punching of the 9"
light re-punching of the 0 and 8 --
"one of the most obvious RPDs in the series"

Quite the find!

Good info, Matthew. I may need to get a copy of that guide to supplement my other references. Thanks!

If you save up and get a nice stereoscope or even a cheap USB microscope then these variety hunts get a lot more comfortable. Granted they can't really be used while walking around at a show, but afterwards I find my stereoscope a pretty essential piece of equipment as I get older along with my eyes.

I started off with a 30x Panasonic lightscope in the 1980's which I still have and sometimes use at shows, much better than the tiny high-power loupes out there in my experience. Portable and has it's own light source built in. I think they're out of production now, but still come up for sale on Amazon and ebay occasionally.
1908-Barber-Dime---RPD-FS-301? I love using mine, it takes some getting used to, as in everything is flipped so you have to remember to move the opposite direction as you are seeing, the batteries last a fairly long time as it shuts off when closed, no forgetting to turn it off. 30x is a bit too much power for anything but RPD's the field of view barely fits 2 digits of a Morgan dollar. I got mine to use in examining regummed stamps, but now collect coins pretty much exclusively so I kept it. I've seen new ones sell for under $35.00 in the past year, not too bad considering I paid that almost 40 years ago.

Nice catch and some good eyesight. I'd miss things like that.
