A completely nerdy mystery for 1894 proof Morgans is calculating how many coins were struck from each proof die pairing. There were at least four obverse proof dies and at least five reverse proof dies. Three separate obverse dies are classified as VAM-1 (including this coin, which is VAM-1 Die Pair 1) and a fourth obverse die is classified as VAM-2 (far date). With an official proof mintage of just 972 coins, very few were struck from each die pairing. I'd love to see anyone assemble a full set of the 1894 proof die pairings.
All business strikes are VAM-3, and all came from one die pairing. No proof dies were used for business strikes.
