Looks like a proof but the current pics make me think the coin has been played with ..... like it's been cleaned and retoned.

Better pics would help.

99.9% sure it's proof because of
A.) The denticles
B.) The eagle
C.) The fields

It's a proof.

The pics are just not sharp enough to enlarge all the way to see the key details. Based on the pics, though, this appears to be a VAM-1, Die Pair 1 proof. The date appears to line up correctly, with the "1" just over 2 denticles from the truncation of the neck and the east serif of the "4" squarely over the 13th denticle. The position of the "1" would eliminate Die Pair 3. The bow has the horizontal lines, which eliminates Die Pair 2. That leaves Die Pair 1.

EDIT: Though the pics could be higher resolution, the markers are not right for VAM-3, which is the only die pair for the business strikes.

PR63 a desirable and often sought after proof example, as the mint state examples in high grade are so dang rare. The color looks fine, like it was stored a long time in a velvet box or bag. What is bothering me is the scratches on the reverse and one light one obverse one under the eye, enough to make details? I don't think it has enough oomph to make a CAM designation. PCGS population is about 500 give or take the crackouts, resubs and cross-overs, so a fairly common coin for a proof, I think the TPGs would be tougher on these, but think it may have straight graded.

I wish I owned it but it was being offered for $21k because NGC graded it PF68. That was odd because I thpught I saw some pitting in the fields near the P in PLURIBUS. Anyhow, there are better things I can think of to spend $21k on. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I have the coin at PF details surface pitting as my grade. Pretty coin but overgraded and overpriced imho.

WOW I agree overgraded, overpriced, just look at some of the 1894 PR66 and better on Heritage's site so many much nicer examples have been sold for a lot, lot less.

IMO No way should a PR68 coin have obvious scratching or surface issues, that alone should preclude it from anything beyond PR64 Details.

A completely nerdy mystery for 1894 proof Morgans is calculating how many coins were struck from each proof die pairing. There were at least four obverse proof dies and at least five reverse proof dies. Three separate obverse dies are classified as VAM-1 (including this coin, which is VAM-1 Die Pair 1) and a fourth obverse die is classified as VAM-2 (far date). With an official proof mintage of just 972 coins, very few were struck from each die pairing. I'd love to see anyone assemble a full set of the 1894 proof die pairings.

All business strikes are VAM-3, and all came from one die pairing. No proof dies were used for business strikes.
