I just squared away a layaway arrangement with the owner of this coin. It won't be in hand for about 6-8 weeks but it's locked in. Here is the soon-to-be 4th piece to my 1905 toned proof set. Here's the seller's photo. I will update the photo once it is in hand. Edited by DoctorBurnzy 06/16/2019 12:33 pm

Thanks. I've been looking ahead the last couple months for a 1905 proof Barber dime with color graded PCGS on ebay, Heritage, GC, and other coin sites etc and hadn't seen one that peaked my interest.....I looked at a site I had never been to before and there it was just in at the end of May. I emailed the owner and we set up terms. I won't add it to my digital PCGS album until its in hand though. Now, to look for the right proof Barber half dollar maybe a year down the road or so....and to find a suitable upgrade for the proof Liberty nickel if I want to hold a top spot, but it will have to have the right color/look for it to happen.

Hi... Just who were the people who bought proof coins during this time? Rich folks showing off? True numismatists? Ordinary people? (Not likely) A quiet thank you to those who did buy these coins and have passed them down to we collectors of today.

Rick Snow addresses some of this in his book.....The 1860's through roughly 1900 proofs if I recall went to some Senators, Presidents, the big shots.......and others went to collectors. I wish they were more easily attributed to the owners back then. The proof count wasn't that high of a mintage pre 1920 so it did make it hard for the average collector to get one. There's an excerpt from a letter in his book where someone asks for a proof penny and offers no more than $5 dollars in the letter. That's a nice sum for a penny back in the 1880s.

Of course, DoctorBurnzy, political paybacks and some hanky panky. "Want to please the silver advocates?" Give them samples.. Want to please the gold advocates? Give them samples. I never quite understood this tug of war between gold and silver. So it was't collectors who passed down these coins - it was the rich and powerful. Thanks for the education.....

It's on hold til it's paid but the seller has some other phenomenal pieces I'd be interested in down the road. As soon as I saw it I contacted the seller and he said he does 3 payments on anything for layaway. I said lock it in first payment next week. The seller has a really good reputation. I didn't actually think I was going to find a colorful piece for the proof dime so soon. But, there it was. I wish the photo was a little better, but even with the photo not being the very best...it still shows off a seemingly great coin. The next piece..the final piece is going to be 1 -2 (3) years probably down the road for the half dollar....I'm going to have to tighten the belt to get that piece. Ha. I'm going to have to sneak up slowly on the La Jolla collection for the 1905 proof set if I ever get the half dollar which puts me ahead...I'll have to add it to the collection a day or 2 before the closing of the PCGS submissions one year....but I'm sure La Jolla will see me coming when I add the dime. Game on La Jolla. Game on!
